We have just spent 3 nights staying at The Crown Hotel. What an absolutely lovely place. Not sure why there's been some negative reviews because we couldn't fault it. All the staff are so friendly and welcoming, the pub has a great atmosphere and it's quite obvious it's supported by locals as well as visitors which is always a positive sign. We were very happy with our room, it was clean and the bed was comfortable. Very impressed with being able to fill out a form each morning choosing whether we'd like the room cleaned, towels changed, tea/coffee supplies added etc. Such a great idea. We ate in the restaurant every night and enjoyed all the meals we had. Breakfast was superb - cooked to perfection every time. It is a 16th century inn full of character, wooden beams and, yes, creaky floors in the corridor - only to be expected from such a great place of that age! It's perfectly situated within Framlingham - such a beautiful place - and literally just down the road from Framlingham Castle. We would highly recommend staying here.

This is based on experiences with the pub staff only, have never stayed here as live locally and what follows is an email exchange between myself and Chris, whoever that is. I'll leave you all to draw your own opinions from it: I am writing to you as a regular customer of The Crown. My friend and I frequently visit your establishment because we highly value its historic location, excellent décor, and the peaceful atmosphere created by the absence of TV screens and loud music. However, following a series of recent incidents, we feel compelled to bring several serious concerns regarding staff attitude and business management to your attention. 1. Emergency Cash Handling and Incident Management (Late June) During the widespread internet outage in Framlingham at the end of June, we were disappointed by the staff's inability to manage transactions without card readers. There was no paper price list available, and staff lacked the basic initiative or training to calculate bills manually using pen and paper, or to securely collect cash to process the following day. Instead of implementing standard business workarounds, the team chose to close the pub early. This resulted in a significant loss of revenue to competing local pubs that remained open. Furthermore, when we politely suggested workarounds, staff made us feel unwelcome. It later became apparent that the team's primary motivation for closing early was to watch an England football match. 2. Premature Closures and Lost Revenue We have noticed a persistent trend of last orders being called excessively early. While early closures might be understandable during quiet winter periods, last orders were called at 9:30 pm last Tuesday evening despite clear demand. We personally witnessed at least five groups of potential customers turned away after this time. Given the widely publicised challenges currently facing the hospitality industry, turning away valid trade appears to be a major failure in local business management. 3. Unprofessional Staff Conduct and Hospitality Standards When we previously queried these early closing times in a casual, conversational manner, the responses from your front-of-house team were unacceptable. This week, a female staff member responded rudely, stating, "I feel like we’ve had this conversation before," while a male colleague dismissively added, "It is a hotel and restaurant as well you know." This lack of hospitality was further highlighted shortly before 10:00 pm, when resident hotel guests entered the bar area and were flatly refused service. When a female guest asked for a hot chocolate, she was told the machine was turned off. No effort was made by the staff to offer a simple alternative, such as heating milk manually. This defensive and unaccommodating attitude entirely contradicts basic hospitality standards, particularly when dealing with overnight residents. The Crown is a wonderful venue with immense potential, but its reputation is currently being compromised by poor operational oversight and a lack of customer-focused training. I would welcome the opportunity to hear your thoughts on these matters and to learn what steps are being taken to improve staff training, management oversight, and your closing-time policies. From: The Crown Framlingham Sent: 17 August 2026 13:46 Good afternoon, Thank you for your observations regarding our business in your email dated 6th August 2026. I appreciate the information you have provided. It is easy to make assumptions and judgements without considering the full facts or indeed the constraints faced by individuals or businesses. I find your observations largely uninformed, one-sided and in some cases factually incorrect. Your comments do not accurately reflect the complexities of a business or the challenges currently faced by any organisation. As a privately owned business, I would like to clarify that I do not believe it is necessary to elaborate on the practises and procedures we use when making business decisions. Therefore when you state ‘I would welcome the opportunity to hear your thoughts on these matters and to learn what steps are being taken to improve staff training, management oversight, and your closing-time policies.’ I am not entirely sure why you think that would be appropriate or even something that would be remotely considered. Regards Chris Dear Chris, Thank you for your reply. While I understand that businesses face internal complexities, a response of this nature helps clarify the context behind your frontline staff's conduct. The standard of communication set by management naturally influences the workplace culture. I respect your right as a private business owner to manage your operations as you see fit. My observations were offered in good faith, but it appears they are not particularly welcome—an experience that unfortunately seems to mirror how customers are made to feel. For your information Greene King, as the owners of the site, have been advised of this matter and will be taking the necessary action to ensure, you, as the operator address the situation appropriately and uphold their brand standards. I consider the matter closed.
