This hotel is in a beautiful spot. It clearly hasn’t been refurbished for decades; old and tired. It needs a proper renovation programme. In terms of service, Bertie was nice and very helpful.

Hoogovens

Lousy! We arrived for breakfast at 9.50 am. The barman looked flustered and said we dont open until 10am. Any chance of some tea whilst we wait? OK! 15 minutes later no tea. We ordered bacon butties- 25 minutes later two slabs of bread , no butter and some anaemic bacon. I asked him to crisp up the bacon- another 10 minutes. Tasted vile & cost £21 for two . British catering back to the 1960's . Useless staff who couldn't care less

A pleasant stay overall. Eileen at Reception was very welcoming and gave a thorough explanation on arrival. Our first room was quirky with a four-poster bed, but the TV didn’t work. As we’d timed our arrival for my partner to watch England’s Six Nations match, Eileen quickly moved us to another room, which was much appreciated. The second room was comfortable and we slept well… until about 6.50am on Sunday, when what sounded like a helicopter landed in the room. An almighty racket — presumably a boiler or fan — shook the bed and woke us up. We’d booked a night away for some peace and a Sunday lie-in, so this was very irritating. It stopped after five minutes, then started again an hour later, at which point we gave up the idea of sleeping and got up. As others have mentioned, the place could do with some TLC. Our room still had a broken tap, cracked floor tile, broken chair and only three of the five pendant lights working — thankfully. We assumed the extra lights were to help guide the helicopter to its landing pad. Great breakfast and friendly service again in the morning. Overall good value for money and comfortable — just please sort out that incredibly loud machinery, whatever it is.
