I stayed at this hotel and it was, without question, one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had.
The first room I was given had a strong smell of urine. The carpet stank, there was dust everywhere, crumbs and food bits behind the bedside table, what appeared to be mouse droppings, and dirty clothing stuffed down behind the headboard — either men’s boxers or a T-shirt. It was absolutely disgraceful and I could not sleep there.
I asked to change rooms and was moved just after midnight. To be fair, the second room was an upgrade. It was clean and definitely a nicer room, but the noise was unbearable. There was television playing all night long through what felt like paper-thin walls, floors and ceilings. After the ordeal of the first room and then the constant noise in the second room, I barely got four hours’ sleep.
The next morning, I had to attend an all-day conference from early morning, completely shattered and very tired after the experience the night before.
When I returned to the hotel at around 6:30 p.m., there was loud music playing, with someone singing at the top of their voice. It sounded like it was in the room. I kindly went to reception and asked for help. To be fair, the staff went to the room and asked the person to turn it down.
The man then became very abusive towards the staff, cursing at them. After they left, he started banging doors and banging walls. I calmly walked down the stairs, and he came out and asked me if I was the one who had complained. He was very intoxicated and it was extremely uncomfortable.
At that point, I told the staff enough was enough. I needed a clean, quiet room and I was not taking any more of this. To be fair to the staff, they did give me another room.
The third room was clean, old and quiet. However, the shower hose was leaking and the shower could not be used properly. The next morning, when I was leaving, I opened the window and it would not close again. It was completely buckled and clearly not fit to be opened. How was I supposed to know that?
When I first arrived at the hotel, there was a man sitting on the stairs at reception, rolling up what appeared to be a roll-up cigarette. I later discovered this was the exact same man who appeared to be living downstairs near the second room — the same man who was later drunk, hurling abuse, banging doors and walls, and making the situation extremely uncomfortable.
In my opinion, this hotel is a disgrace. The first room was a serious health concern, with the smell of urine, dirt, dust, possible droppings, food debris and dirty clothing left behind. The noise, the atmosphere, the condition of the rooms and the overall experience were completely unacceptable.
The staff I dealt with did their best and I do not blame them personally. The problem is the hotel itself.
With all that being said, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
I am honestly surprised it is still open, and I was horrified to read other reviews with similar complaints. How a place like this is allowed to operate from a health and safety point of view is beyond me. I cannot understand how, in the UK, health and safety could visit a place like this and allow it to continue operating in such a run-down condition.
They also had a restaurant on site, and I am genuinely glad I did not eat there. For God’s sake, if that was the state of the rooms, I can only imagine what the rest of the place was like.
A very bad experience from start to finish. Absolutely disgraceful.
