Red Lion Hotel

I booked this hotel directly with Greene King six months in advance as was attending a concert with free cancellation up to 12 noon on the day. I had also reserved a number of other hotels on hotels.com including this one hoping to decide closer to the time and cancel the rooms no longer required which I did. However, there was a mix up and I failed to cancel the direct booking which I explained to the hotel but they were completely unsympathetic. I explained the situation and the oversight on my part but there was no room for any negotiation and they took £102.00 for the night that I failed to stay. I understand the hotel were unable to sell the room and I did not expect a full refund but a token or a credit could have been offered as a goodwill gesture. They do not send any reminder emails just the booking confirmation at time of booking. As a frequent hotel guest I will now avoid green king hotels and advise people to not use the Greene King site always use a third party site as easier to cancel and keep track of bookings.

Met friends here and it isprobably not an experience I will repeat. The place itself was pleasant, but the bar staff were unsmiling, unapproacable and slight blunt when serving us. The restaurant was nice, comfortable but the sever again was unsmiling and blunt. I have worked in hospitality for 40 years and the one thing I have also been told and told me staff, no matter how busy or stressed you are, whilst at work in front of customers always smile and not one was. Food took a long time to come out and was luke warm. Reported to staff member who basically shrugges at us and asked what I wasnted to do? Shouldn't they advise me what they can do? Anyway I was too tired to argue, so told them to leave it and just ate luke warm food. Starters & Desserts were delicious though. So if you just want drinks, starters and desserts this is your place.

Lovely 18th century coaching Inn, but.. Very outdated accommodation the decor the furniture. Bathroom tap, shower screen and sealant falling apart, mould, water pressure inconsistency, both for loo snd shower, carpet shrinking away from the walls, didn’t feel clean in areas, dust caked on one radiator..near bar. No adequate measures taken to accommodate the heatwave ( no air conditioning) small 3 speed fan supplied but barely working. Bed wasn’t very comfortable either. Two TVs in room?? both poor quality non functional remotes. The section we stayed in has the room door knobs not shutting properly, fiddly circa 1970 push button job. Very good location, friendly, helpful staff, good range of drinks available in bar. Good size Car park available but not value for my money.
