Ashdown Park

The staff were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable throughout our stay, but the hotel seemed noticeably understaffed, particularly in the dining areas. There were lots of uncleared plates and leftover afternoon tea items around, which wasn't the nicest atmosphere to sit in. It felt as though the team were overstretched trying to host a wedding alongside their regular guests. The grounds are absolutely stunning and were the highlight of our visit. We loved exploring the gardens with our two-year-old daughter, and we also really enjoyed using the swimming pool. Unfortunately, the accommodation and food didn't live up to the setting. We were advised to book a Junior Suite because it supposedly offered separate living and sleeping areas, but in reality it was just one large room, making it feel overpriced for what we received. During a heatwave, we were also surprised there was no air conditioning or even a fan provided. Breakfast was particularly disappointing. My vegetarian Full English arrived burnt, and the ingredients looked very cheap and processed. The other breakfasts being served around us didn't look much more appealing. Overall, Ashdown House has the feel of a hotel that must have been exceptional at one point, but today it feels tired and past its prime. That's a real shame because the location and grounds are genuinely spectacular. We left feeling slightly disappointed overall, as the experience didn't justify the price.

An old-fashioned, beautiful building with style and lots of activities: we stayed for a week and often spent the whole day onsite. We loved the surrounding gardens and park, with freedom to wander for miles. The staff are outstanding and extremely helpful. Congratulations to whoever designed and made the Winnie the Pooh walks which entranced our young visitor, hugging her teddy bought at the hotel. The food is more suitable for a one off celebration, although lunchtime soup and snacks in the Brasserie were perfect as were the staff there. The main menus seem to be exchanging vegetables in quantity, salad items other than lettuce and quality meat for cheap alternatives adorned with fashionable sauces, sometimes in horrible combination. Breakfasts were wonderful, however and there are a number of local pubs which do serve good appetising British and more exotic main courses nearby.

Beautiful location, great atmosphere, lovely rooms, great food and polite staff. I would highly recommend this hotel, and I hope to revisit with friends in the not too distant future.
