Guyers House Hotel

Lovely buildings. Fabulous garden. Staff helpful, polite and pleasant. Our pelmet was half down in the bedroom on arrival and stayed that way. Several people said their showers would not work, others had no water coming out in the basin. Our shower was fine but only emitted cold water which was fine in the heat wave. Breakfasts for two days were grim. Third day all of a sudden an à la carte menu was in place. Very few choices on menu which was very rarely changed apparently. With a fairly small financial input and a guiding hand in place the hotel would be good but it definitely needs a manager rather than let these poor people (3 of them + chef) manage everything.

Table booked and deposit payed for quarter to seven. We walked round the gardens for 10 mins and came back to a queue of 3 separate parties. To then be told there was no space inside. We sat outside. Ordered at 7:30. Asked for my drink 15 mins later to be told they’re busy. Table next to us received 2 of 3 starters. When they asked if it was coming the waitress blamed it on the kitchen being busy. Food was brought out before our cutlery was given to us. It’s now 8 and we don’t have our mains yet. The whole place is slow and covered in dust. Table next to us got their mains before they had finished their starter that was eventually brought out. The waitress brought my food out to turn to me to say she had rememberd I had asked for no salad so she turned round and took my steak back to the kitchen to take the salad of my plate. Just put the plate down I don’t care if it has salad. Orderd a lemonade which didn’t arrive. Only one of our drinks arrived. Ordered steak medium and fries and peppercorn. No peppercorn in sight what came out was gravy. The fries barley looked like they had been cooked and I couldn’t eat the steak because the pure amount of water that came out of it whilst eating. Diabolical don’t waste your time.

The grounds were absolutely stunning, a truly lovely and peaceful place. Honestly that’s where my praise ends. The rooms were not rustic and charming, they were tired and old fashioned. The bare minimum amenities. It was fine, but nowhere near 4 stars. The bathroom was absolutely roasting for some reason, and the extractor fan didn’t work. The shower was the worst part, practically impossible to use because it kept spitting out scalding water every 10 seconds. I tried to change the shower head mode to see if it helped and it literally fell apart in my hands. All you really want from a hotel is for the bed to be comfy, and the shower to work. To be fair, the bed was extremely comfy, we slept very well. The vibes also were just a bit off, the lady on the way out was really kind and caring, you could tell when we told her about the shower that it was not the first time she had heard about it, and when she said she would add it to the maintenance list, I could tell by the look on her face that the list was long. The lady on the way in however was very rude, she made us wait a while, and spoke to us as thought we were in trouble or had done something wrong. We didn’t go to the restaurant, but by the looks of the reviews it’s not much better. I would avoid!
