Absolute trash, the upkeep and the people who work there. The room looked like it had been cleaned with a dirty sock, and the bathtub/shower might as well have had a sign that said "Please enjoy your complimentary skin infection." The whole lobby reeked of weed and cigarettes, and when I spied a dog in the corner, I thought, "That's nice, they allow animals!" But it turns out what I thought was baggage and a pet was actually a displaced person and their animal taking refuge. Do I have a problem with weed, cigarettes, and unhoused people? Absolutely not, I practically encourage anyone to party and misbehave a little bit, I mean, come on, isn't that the appeal of a hotel? And giving less fortunate folks some respite from the cold? By all means, unhoused people are society's most vulnerable; we should show them some compassion. But were they aggressively thrown out by invasive security guards at 3:00AM for baseless accusations of nonpayment? We wouldn't know. We didn't have time to ask because WE WERE TOO BUSY BEING THROWN OUT AT 3:00AM! Why? According to the monosyllabic security guard who woke my partner and I by pounding on the door like some maniac, saying "your room isn't paid for, you need to leave immediately, hotel policy." Well, we were confused because how did we get our keys, parking pass, why did they check our ID’s on arrival, how did they know that we had family staying with us? When I explained that my mother made the booking, and whether or not he spoke with her, he said "tried knocking and they didn't answer." Maybe because it was 3:00AM? So protocol for these folks is to kick their guests out with a mumbly explanation and no course correction or double-checking the booking information. Stellar! Once I realized I was matching wits with a boulder I said, "you know what, I don't want to stay in this ****hole anyway!" We hastily packed up, I yelled a string of very unkind (but, in my opinion, justified) things to the hostile staff and exited. Ever been woken up by assaultive pounding on your door when you're out of your comfort zone? AND you haven't done anything wrong? AND there’s been a recent death in your family? It's not a good feeling. Also how am I supposed to ‘trust’ some random dude is what they say they are? He didn’t have any credentials, just a dumb expression, costume shop quality uniform and Yankees cap. Thinking back, the right move would be to call the police and say, “there’s a strange man outside my hotel room demanding we leave. We haven’t done anything wrong. We don’t feel safe.” This place is pure trash. Did I also mention my partner and I just came from a wake for the untimely passing of a close family friend? Add that to the mix with the ungodly 3:00AM timing, yeah that would make anyone irate. Furthermore, I’ve been in the hospitality business for over twenty years, and there’s at least five different ways to handle a booking issue and none of them involve throwing people out. Maybe double check the information, ask for billing confirmation, talk to your staff members “were these folks properly checked in?”, wait until an appropriate hour and inquire in person, make a telephone call, USE COMMON SENSE. I guess that’s too much to expect. Was my exit hostile? You bet, I returned my card by spitting on it, sticking it to the wall, then suggesting they store it in an intimate and uncomfortable part of their body. I regret nothing. After relaying this story to my mother, who made the booking, she confirmed that our room was valid and paid for, and this, according to them, "not the first time this has happened." Well, don't let it happen to you. Avoid this place like the bubonic plague; honestly it was such a dump it feels like you could actually contract it. Also I’m reading all these other completely scathing reviews, each one seems to escalate in how horrible this place is, and I feel like we’re in the top tier of contenders for “worst experience.” I’ve read about bed bugs, roaches, feces/urine stained linens, rude and sexually predatory staff, drug use, racial profiling, car break ins, and other various criminal activities. And every response is the same copy & paste, boilerplate BS, “we’re very sorry about your unpleasant experience at the Red Roof Inn Hartford - New Britain, we take these ____ seriously and are working to make …” An apology means a regretful acknowledgement, with the intention of preventing it from happening again. Yet this place keeps rolling out the hits. Do us all a favor, close your doors. You ‘tried’, you failed, your failures outweigh your non-existent virtues, and frankly this place feels dangerous enough to be deemed a criminal organization. Honestly, the health board should contacted, and we're discussing legal options.
