We stayed at the Holiday Inn Aurora North in September 2026 and unfortunately experienced multiple issues, including one very serious security concern.
Our first room had a toilet that ran continuously and made a loud, high-pitched noise about every 10 seconds. We were told it could not be fixed, so we were moved to a different room on the 4th floor.
The moment we entered the room, we noticed an overwhelming smell of smoke mixed with a very heavy powder/fragrance that seemed intended to cover the odor. It wasn't simply unpleasant—the air quality caused breathing discomfort and made it difficult to comfortably remain in the room. We were told the hotel was at capacity, so we tried to make the best of it.
I later learned there had been a reported fire at this hotel in July 2024 involving a room on the fourth floor, with heavy smoke reported on that floor. Since we were in a 4th floor room, I contacted the hotel with concerns about whether our room or surrounding area had been affected and what remediation had been performed. I cannot say whether the two are connected, but given the strong smoke-like odor and breathing discomfort we experienced, it was concerning.
Another alarming issued involved our room keys. Our key cards repeatedly stopped working throughout the evening. This was a common occurrence for other members that were staying in different rooms as well. Around 9 PM, we returned to the front desk and were given two new keys. I then realized I had never told the employee our room number. When I asked what room the keys had been programmed for, we discovered we had been given an engineering key that could access ANY hotel room.
We had been handed keys capable of opening other guests' rooms without requesting them, without providing our room number, and without any verification. This was an extremely serious security failure. We immediately returned to our room, locked and dead-bolted the door, and no longer felt secure.
We left the hotel the following morning and did not stay the second night of our reservation. I contacted management afterward and requested a refund based on the condition of the room, breathing discomfort, security incident, and our early departure. My refund request was denied by the hotel.
I have never left a review like this, but I believe future guests should be aware of our experience — particularly the air-quality and room-security concerns.
