I stayed at the Residence Inn Kalamazoo with a somber group as we organized a family funeral. While the hotel itself was comfortable, it was the staff—specifically Joyce and Lucy—who made our stay unforgettable. They are truly kind, thoughtful, and genuine people. They worked at lightning speed to clear, serve, and clean, but they never made us feel like just another task. They always slowed down to have real conversations with us, whether we were in the dining area, in the hallways, or coming back for the evening. They shared their own stories and real-world experiences with us, offering words of comfort that felt incredibly sincere. In a week that felt very heavy, their warmth was a bright spot. Thank you, Joyce and Lucy, for leading with your hearts.

This hotel is tired at best and sketchy at worst. It certainly wasn’t what I expected from this brand. The smell of the cleaning agents used in the room was overwhelming, but two out of three of the windows were duct-taped closed because the room had two stand-alone dehumidifiers (that should also say something) that needed to be vented to the outside. The carpet and fixtures were old. The black plastic utensils (spatulas, spoons, etc.) in the kitchen were so old and worn that they were a health hazard. They were literally disgusting and I’d never, ever use them. On the way up to the second-floor room, we had to pass someone’s laundry laying all over the bushes, ground, and stairwell rail. Seriously, like underwear and everything. There were about 20 pieces of clothing laying out to dry, so one couldn’t even use part of the handrail going up the stairs. The stairwell itself was rusty and uncared for. I got such a bad feeling from the derelict laundry lying about, the sense of disrepair, the 20-year-old kitchenware, and the chemical smell in the room that I did not spend the night and forfeited my $350 a night (!!!!!!!!!!) to get out of there.
