Rusted refrigerator under bathroom sink and pubic hair in paint around bathroom door frame were too much. I left after first night of 3, which I had prepaid. Owner refused to refund money for last two nights. A real clown show at the reservation desk. I booked through Choice Hotels and never again. If you expect cleanliness, look elsewhere.

We were on a 5800 mile trip covering 17 states and this was the the worst hotel we experienced. Other guests sitting on their cars drinking beer and playing rap music in the parking lot; aggressive dogs running loose; no pool; dirty, and a very poor ecuse for breakfast which was never served on time.

Let me start by saying I am not one of those people who books a hotel of this level and expects Four Seasons facilities and service.
We needed to move my daughter into Ithaca College which is about 40 minutes away. Hotels in / near Ithaca were outrageously priced for move-in weekend and I thought it would be worth the drive to stay in Horseheads.
I carefully read reviews on TripAdvisor and I figured this hotel was a lock. That turned out to not be the case.
1 - Check-in experience was good and the staff was lovely and helpful.
2 - The room smelled INCREDIBLY musty. It got slightly better after the AC cooled the room off, but the musty smell remained. ...To the point where I went out an bought Febreeze and doused the room. It barely helped. Some rooms allow smoking. We were in a non-smoking room (306), but possibly an old smoke smell tainted the room.
3 - The room was reasonably clean and tidy. VERY dated, but I can live with that and some aspects of the age are kind of charming
4 - There was a small bug in my daughter's bed which had a reddish color and moved / looked like a small roach. I reported it to the front desk. I get it... bugs exist, but roaches are not a good sign.
5 - There is a quaint bar / restaurant right by the hotel (walkable). It's old, but nice. The menu is varied, and since the restaurant is owned by a Chinese family, there is a Chinese section of the menu. It was very good. The wonton soup is particularly good. Definitely try this if you stay at this hotel.
6 - Breakfast is extremely limited. Basically bagels, cereal, and hard-boiled eggs are the extent of it. They put put out a block of cream cheese, cut into small cubes, and a tub of margarine. So it's very communal.
Before I would ever consider staying at this hotel again, they would have to renovate. Really all they need is new carpet and soft goods. They HAVE to get rid of the musty smell. As it stands, that makes this hotel unacceptable.
There are other reviews that mention the smell, so I don't think my experience was unique.
