Fort Place Bed & Breakfast

I stayed here 3 nights in a fridgid spell in December. Tho I was here mainly to enjoy the Christmas sights and museums in Manhattan I saved quite a few $$s by staying in Staten Island and the ferry ride was a relaxing way to start and end my days. In the evening I would catch the S42 or S52 bus fromD lane at the ferry and get off at St Marks which leaves you a half block away.chuch with huge steeple on corner , deili right across from the bnb. in morning I would just walk the 5or so blocks to ferry. The owner, Paul, was welcoming and friendly and flexible with checkin if you let him know about what time you arrive. I got here after 9pm,no problem. I had the Queen suite a large homey, old fashioned room as shown in the pix. Beautiful bath down hall with clawfoot tub. there is a stopper in bath cabinet if you want to enjoy a hot bath rather than quick shower. The bath is private for your use only, and just a few steps down the hall.There is also a small kitchen with microwave and mini fridge and cups and plates .Breakfast and coffee not provided but you could bring some coffee with you or run across the street to get breakfast from the deli.Pauls artwork decorates the rooms and hallways. I enjoyed my stay and would definitely return.

PROS: The owner was extraordinarily nice and friendly. The room was clean. For the price ($90 a night) and location (trendy St. George neighborhood), I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a better value in the area. Hotels would be far more expensive and require transportation to get to the ferry, whereas this location is a very short walk there. CONS: Calling it a “bed and breakfast” is a tremendous misnomer, as there was no breakfast (nor snacks, water, etc.). The Wi-Fi is unreliable. It’s very close to the street, so if the sounds of local traffic negatively affect you, be aware. But perhaps the biggest “issue” for a potential guest could be the lack of an en suite. I stayed in a room on the third floor. Although it was clean and had a functional TV with cable, it didn’t have an adjacent bathroom. I had to use the one down the hall, which is connected to another bedroom. Had guests been staying there, I don’t know what the “restroom arrangements” would have been should they have their bedroom door locked.

Dirty, the stench when we entered the room was almost unbelievable, my wife started to choke herself with cough, having no other alternative we decided to stay, so we opened every window we could find and went out for a couple of hours, upon return it became breathable, on the net site it was announced a parking space and breakfast, but there were none offered, instead we were directed on street parking and the deli across the road. The neighborhood doesn't feel safe although nothing happened, so maybe it was just a bad feeling due to state of the house . Only upside is it's close, walking distance, to Staten Island Ferry.
