We are owners at WillowBrook. We haven’t been here in a few years. Unfortunately our work schedule got in the way. Finally both retired and ready for adventure.
We just got home from our week long trip, staying in Willowbrook. We were a little shocked to see that Split Rock was closed. That’s where we would normally check in.
No phone call or email explaining where now to check in. They have my email address and I know this because I have been repeatedly harassed to pay my yearly maintenance fee which was paid early. I have called them and also emailed them, to which they stated they received it and were sorry. I still receive them weekly, I just ignore them now.
We made a phone call to ask where to go to check in and we’re given our instructions.
Made it to our room and at first I was okay.
Upon inspection I realized the shower was in desperate need of some TLC. Stains on the bathroom sink were also an issue.
I laughed when I saw the bedroom because the furniture hasn’t changed at all in 17 years except for a new television.
The couch in the living room is what I would think that Fred Flinstons couch would feel like, hard as a rock!! I had no idea they made furniture like that. The upgraded television was great but we weren’t sitting on that couch.
The refrigerator had such a foul smell that I took it apart but still couldn’t find where the odor was coming from. One bowl, one knife and very few pieces of kitchen equipment.
Four windows in the living space but only one screen.
The carpet has been replaced, that’s nice.
Bel-Air was supposed to do wonderful things for Split Rock but all they’ve done is neglect the property and run it into the ground. They are truly slumlords. No “resort” fee was paid because nothing was open but the bowling alley and arcade. We don’t use Split Rock anyway, we choose to go off grounds and explore.
Willowbrook only redeemed itself with the breakfast and our wonderful hostess Danielle.
She was a pleasure to visit with each morning.
We also loved Logan at the front desk. We had some good afternoon and evening chats with him as well.
Nick’s restaurant, Jim Thorpe and surrounding hikes kept us busy. Unfortunately you really have to go off sight to enjoy your stay here.
Hopefully Split Rock Bel-Air will do the right thing for their guests and owners and fix this place up to its former glory.
Disappointed

Hello Nelly:
We stayed at Split Rock resort from
August 17-21. We are members of interval
International Since
2002.
Christine the supervisor at Split
Rock told us to write directly to you.
We are quite upset:
1. No internet connection in the room.
2. No owners welcome kit in the room. Had to ask the front desk for them.
3. No oven tray
4. I had to wait 2
days to get
(Paper towel, toilet tissues, garbage bags)
5. Elevator was not working on August 21. Had to carry all the bags downstairs.
Let me tell you this was the worst experience of
time-share stay.
Please return the all fees collected
during our check in.
Sincerely,
Alok and Shikha Mittra

I really wanted to like Split Rock, but unfortunately I would not stay here again at the current prices.
First, I want to say that the employees I encountered were friendly and nice. My criticism is really about the property and the value, not the individual staff.
The biggest problem is that the resort is simply far too expensive for what you get. I paid more than $250 per night for a room that was very dated and, frankly, dingy. The room photos on the resort's website were not representative of the room we actually received. The carpet, furnishings, appliances, mini-stove and dishwasher all looked extremely dated—almost like they belonged in a resort from the 1970s. There were also various smells throughout the property that I couldn't quite identify, but they seemed like some combination of dampness and/or old smoke.
The restaurant was another disappointment. I paid $47 for two juices, a coffee and three breakfast sandwiches. The sandwiches were clearly microwaved, and the bacon was so fatty and soggy that my kids couldn't even finish them. At that price, I would expect considerably better food.
What really bothered me was the nickel-and-diming. The gym costs extra to use, and children aren't even permitted to use it. Many of the other resort amenities also require additional fees. I didn't have time to use most of them during our short stay, so I can't comment on their quality, but given the room rate, I would expect at least some meaningful amenities to be included.
Even something as basic as coffee felt unnecessarily restrictive. The complimentary coffee is taken away at 8:00 a.m. sharp, right when the overpriced resort store opens. For a room costing more than $250 a night, I would expect complimentary coffee to remain available in the morning.
I can imagine that Split Rock may have been a fantastic resort decades ago, and there are clearly some nice amenities and a beautiful location. But the property feels old and in need of significant investment. At these prices, I would much rather stay at a modern, conventional hotel nearby.
The employees were pleasant and friendly, and I don't blame them for the condition or pricing of the resort. But the combination of the dated condition, questionable room representation, expensive food, and numerous additional fees simply doesn't justify the price.
Either the property needs a substantial renovation or the rates need to come down significantly. At $250+ per night, I expected considerably more.
