The Vermont Inn

This place is so run down, I don't get how they can ask $600 a night some weekends. Place doesn't have a restaurant as advertised, parking lot is a mess, as is the exterior. All pictures on the web were taken 8-10 yrs ago.

We were extremely disappointed with our stay at The Vermont Inn. We booked in December specifically for an event, and at no point were we notified that the inn had been sold in July or that there had been significant changes to the experience we had booked. Most notably, the restaurant that was advertised on the website was no longer operating. Breakfast, rather than the inn-style breakfast we expected, consisted of pre-wrapped cereal bars and similar items left on a tray. Had we been informed of these material changes before our stay, we would have had the opportunity to make a different lodging choice. Unfortunately, the condition of the property was also extremely run down and not what we expected given the price. The beds were uncomfortable and had noticeable “gulleys” from wear. In one room, the shower head was positioned so that the water sprayed directly toward the wall rather than into the shower. When we mentioned it to the manager, his response was essentially, “Yeah, we have new shower heads in a box.” That seemed to sum up much of the experience—problems were known, but not addressed before guests arrived. There were also issues with locks not operating properly. The manager appeared to be struggling with both the new computer system and basic hospitality procedures, which created additional frustration during an already disappointing stay. While a change in ownership understandably involves a transition period, paying guests should not bear the consequences of a property that is not ready to provide the experience being advertised. This was a very costly stay for the condition of the inn and the level of service provided. Ultimately, we were so dissatisfied that we left early. We understand that new ownership may have plans to improve the property, and we hope they do. However, guests with existing reservations should have been proactively informed about the ownership change and, more importantly, significant changes to amenities and services so they could make an informed decision about whether to keep their reservations. Based on our experience, we cannot recommend The Vermont Inn in its current condition.

The Vermont Inn might have been quite a cozy wonderful place to lodge at in the recent past and many years ago, however, it is anything but that now. We were told the original owner fell ill a while back and then put the property up for sale. A very nice family has since gained ownership and they have a ton of renovations to do which they told us all about. My concern is how long it will take for the renovations because if Mendon has strict rules with zoning, codes and the building inspectors policies, it just might break their bank. Due to the age of the buildings and contents might require replacement of plumbing, electrical wiring, restructuring for support, etc. due to the age and original construction which could take a very long time to complete and meet all the requirements if necessary. We did not get the room I had originally chosen yet they gave us what I think is probably the nicest room currently at the Inn. The room looks beautiful and appeared to have been remodeled recently. Bathroom was large and spacious but still throughout this suite, it needs adaptation to the outlets, shower door, glides on vanity drawers, and cleaning/shampooing of sitting furniture or total replacement. Looking out our side window, you see a lower building roof which is totally covered with heavy tar paper and another section has been capped with aluminum and puddles sit everywhere after the rain. Looking out the nice bay window in the back you can see a lot of nice trees and then when you look closer to the building, there’s a shed with the doors wide open and tools sitting everywhere with a snowblower outside and weeds growing around it. Then 20 feet away from that there’s a portable tarp with a table and tools all around that have been sitting there during our stay. Don’t know whether they were used or not but they’re still sitting everywhere. The only amenities currently available in the lobby areas on the first floor is a lot of old heavily used furniture and tables to sit at as well as the back room/sunroom with more same type furniture, free Internet desk with a computer, tables, board games, checkers table (I couldn’t find the discs) and also a coffee/tea table with several choices. There’s another sitting room on the second floor as well as a coffee/tea room with a table and chairs, refrigerator and microwave. Everything just needs to be updated and replaced with new items. Other than that, absolutely no other “amenities” as listed on their website and other social apps are available at this time. NO fitness room, restaurant, no breakfast, no outdoor dining, no grill usage, pool is quite dirty and unusable, and maybe some other items I didn’t have access to. There’s a small RV parked next to the pool. Maybe the new owner uses it while he’s there working? The landscaping around the entire Inn buildings itself looks like it’s remained untouched for several months. Everything is so overgrown. It’s not a good look. Other small areas have been mowed. Lots of tar paper across the roof areas, past water leaks we could tell from the ceiling in our room, light switches are loose on the wall etc. I could go on-and-on and pick things out but you get the gist of my review. Once all the renovations and additions are complete and if they are up to par, I think it will be truly a beautiful place to lodge at once again. It’s just a matter of time and I do mean a long time if they choose to do this all themselves rather than hire reputable contractors in all phases. If you do choose to stay at The Vermont Inn within the next year, I highly suggest asking lots of questions relative to which amenities are still available and operable, OR, ask for a much discounted rate.
